This column in a recent issue of SYLLABUS magazine draws a
worthwhile analogy between the personal responsiveness of amazon.com
and academic services where more responsiveness would be valuable. 

I've placed 197 orders with amazon.com since I started in 1996, and
I continue to be impressed by their innovations. Academic portal
designers should certainly strive to provide a degree of cumulative
personalization within an undergraduate's four years. And some, like
the U. of Hawaii, are doing it.  --PJK
