Curatorial Assistant, Division of Fishes Museum of Southwestern Biology
University of New Mexico, Albuquerque New Mexico
UNM Grade 6 or $8.76 per hour
40 hrs/week summer 2000 and 20 hrs/week fall 2000
Purpose of the Position: To assist the Collection Manager of Fishes in all
aspects of preparing the collection for relocation to a new facility.
Duties: Assist in the following tasks: reorganization and curation of a
historically important collection of southwestern US fishes stored in jars
and tanks; packing and supervising the relocation of 45,000 lots of fishes
stored in alcohol and buffered formalin; data entry in computer catalogue
as required; processing of adult fishes, larvae and eggs; curating
accessions and preparing those collections for cataloguing; responsible
for general collection housekeeping. Supervision of undergraduate
assistants will also be required.
Required Qualifications: A minimum of a high school diploma and 6 months
to a year of direct experience in museums of natural history or
anthropology.
Preferred Qualifications: A college degree (Associate's or Bachelor's)
with a major in organismal biology, ecology, anthropology or archeology.
Six months to a year of direct experience working in collections of
vertebrates, invertebrates, botany or archeological remains. Despite
their background in education or experience, the successful candidate will
approach this position with a strong interest in and appreciation of
museums and collections of vertebrates. The successful applicant must
have a desire to learn techniques in collection and data management as
well as fish phylogeny and scientific nomenclature, basic principles of
systematics and rules of taxonomy.
Physical Tasks: Must be willing to lift up to 25 lbs., stand for longer
than 15 minutes, stoop, kneel, and reach on a frequent basis. Computer
data entry will require repetitive motion.
Environmental Conditions: Minimal exposure to ethanol, isopropanol and
formalin is possible while using fumehood during preservation of fishes.
Current facility is in the basement of a building, with extremely small
workspace, florescent lighting, and affording no natural light. Air
quality is good but dust is medium to heavy.
Working Conditions: Direct supervision by one Collection Manager and
general supervision by two Curators of Fishes; able to work independently
and to accomplish all work in the safest and most efficient manner
possible; learn divisional policy and base curatorial decisions on these
rules; adaptable to change and work that involves multiple tasks; work
eight hours per day, Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; finish
projects in an acceptable timeframe; if required, extend normal working
hours to include weekends or evenings to accomplish work (will be
financially compensated accordingly).
