Registrar, University of Wisconsin Zoological Museum
The University of Wisconsin Zoological Museum houses extensive collections
of ca. 225,000 vertebrates (skins, skeletons, histological slides,
fluid-preserved specimens). The museum provides support for teaching and
research activities by university personnel both in and outside Wisconsin,
state and federal agencies, and qualified individuals. The museum's
long-term objective is to make information on the entire holdings available
online. In cooperation with the curators, the registrar/database manager
will be responsible for the creation and maintenance of museum records and
transportation of specimens belonging to the permanent collections of the
Zoological Museum. More specifically, this person will:
A. Design new and update and maintain existing files, records, and
retrieval systems (including the museum's databases and web site)
associated with acquisitions, cataloging, loans, packing, shipping,
customs, permits, inventory, storage, and insurance (ca. 65% o time).
B. Function as first contact (by phone, email, or in person) to
direct enquiries to appropriate curator(s). Provide information regarding
museum policies and interact with the museum's clients. Train other
personnel (including hourly helpers) in database entry and verification
(ca. 20% of time).
C. Coordinate and implement loans and shipping arrangements including
associated correspondence and records, assist curators in extracting and
returning loaned specimens to the collections (ca. 15% of time).
Qualifications and relevant experience: Master's degree in zoology,
anthropology, or related required. More than 2 years work experience in
natural history collections after award of master's, including information
technology, database management, and animal classification.
Minimum salary: $36,500 annual salary; full-time, 12-month Academic Staff
position.
This is a two-year, terminal appointment with a possible one-year extension
pending need and funding.
