Another program out there that i chose after testing between it and Extensis 
Portfolio is Adobe Lightroom. It is still in Beta, but even so is a rather 
powerful program. The Beta is available now for free. Looks like the retail 
full product price will be $299.

When I worked on the Move Project for the National Museum of the American 
Indian we too struggled with the issue of how to manage the thousands of 
digital images that our project created.  For this project the museum 
purchased a program called Portfolio by Extensis
