2010 CAP Applications Now Available!

Washington, D.C., September 4, 2009. Heritage Preservation is pleased to announce that applications for the 2010 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) are now available on Heritage Preservation’s Web site at www.heritagepreservation.org/CAP. Applications will be accepted until the postmark deadline of December 1, 2009 and are reviewed for eligibility in the order in which they are received. Participants may schedule their assessments as early as January 1, 2010, making it possible to obtain collections care advice without delay.

CAP provides funds for small to mid-sized museums to hire a professional conservator, approved by Heritage Preservation, for a two-day site visit. During the visit, the CAP assessor examines the museum’s collections, environmental conditions, and sites. The assessor then spends three days writing a report recommending priorities to improve collections care. The assessment reports can assist the museum in developing strategies for improved collections care, long-range planning, and fund-raising for collections care.

CAP funds support assessor professional fees, travel costs, and on-site expenses, making it possible for museums to obtain a pro
fessional conservation survey at a low cost. All participants receive a collections assessment. Museums with buildings older than 50 years receive additional funds for a historic structure assessor to identify priorities for care of the building(s). For institutions with living collections such as zoos, aquariums, nature centers, botanical gardens, and arboreta, CAP can fund a specialist to assess the living collections.

Heritage Preservation is proud to celebrate its twentieth year of administering the Conservation Assessment Program. Visit CAP’s Web site, www.heritagepreservation.org/CAP, to see conservation success stories from former CAP participants over the past twenty years. CAP is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and administered by Heritage Preservation, a national non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of our nation’s collections.
