Scott, 

You might want to contact the Science Museum of Minnesota.  They went
through the same discussion some time ago (10+ years) and now have a
very nice display zebra mussels such as you describe (dead on a motor
and log).  My first thought is to talk to the biologist  - Dick
Oehlenschlager, or contact the Patrick Hamilton, the program director
for the Mississippi Hall where the display is.  They could probably
provide you with some information. Contact information is on the Science
Museum Minnesota web site (www.smm.org).

Dear List Recepients,

This may not be the most appropriate place to solicit this sort of
thing, but here goes:

I'm working on a display on aquatic invasive animals and plants for our
natural history gallery. 

I toyed with the idea of trying to keep LIVE zebra mussels in a tank in
the gallery, but I think this might be too problematic--- i.e. keeping
the mussels alive might be a problem, and there might be permitting
issues (i.e. keeping invasives in a tank)...

So I've decided to try and get ahold of one of those fantastic,
zebra-mussel-encrusted boat-motors, anchors, or other artifacts. (The
zebra mussels would be dead).

I can simply display this in a tank and perhaps pass them off as
"living" (when they're actually dead). Mind you, I wouldn't
intentionally fool anybody; I simply wouldn't state (on any panels or
other signage) whether the mussels are living or dead...

Questions:

1.) Does anyone know where I can get such a mussel-encrusted item?
(Anyone out there willing to gift us one?)

2.) Does anybody know if zebra mussels (like some other mollusks) open
their shells when dead? (In which case, it would be obvious that they're
dead to our visitors?)

Subject: [NHCOLL-L:4798] Looking for a Lungfish model or taxidermy mount

Dear fellow collections professionals,

The Bureau of Natural History of the New Jersey State Museum is
currently planning a small exhibit display of fossil lungfish material,
and we are trying to locate a life-size model (or taxidermy mount) of a
lungfish to display alongside our fossils.

Does your institution have such a specimen or model that we could
borrow? The exhibit is scheduled for a 6 month duration.

Any information or help in locating a model or mount would be most
welcomed.
