Natural History Collection Manager

OPEN COMPETITIVE

LOCATION:     FWC/Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, St. Petersburg, Florida

                       Located central to the University of South Florida Bayboro Campus



JOB DESCRIPTION

This position serves as the Biological Collection Manager and will be responsible for the management and maintenance of biological collections, the organization and maintenance of all pertinent data, and the care of collection facilities.  The successful candidate will work with the Curator to manage all aspects of acquisitions and loans including coordinating with collectors and researchers, facilitating delivery and identifying and cataloging specimens. The Collection Manager will be responsible for the care, storage and proper cataloging of fish and/or invertebrate collections and manage entry of all information into our database system. The successful candidate will be flexible, have excellent communication skills and work well without direct supervision.  The position requires a person who has interest in developing and supporting scientific and educational access for the collections and in curatorial issues.  It is important that the Collection Manager work well in a team atmosphere and support the development of an educational component.  He/she will work closely with the scientific staff of FWRI on all issues pertinent to the collections and may be called upon to develop and lead workshops on taxonomy, preservation techniques and other topics.  Other duties will include the development of taxonomic keys and information sheets for use by institute staff, and the production of reports on collection holdings.  The successful candidate will work with the Curator to identify and solicit support from potential donors and granting agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree with 2 years of experience directly related to biological collections is required.  A Master's Degree and excellent computer skills are preferred.

The qualified candidate will have knowledge of handling and preservation techniques and/or procedures for museum collections and skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. The demonstrated ability to develop, plan and implement short and long-range goals is critical as is the ability to use independent judgment to manage and impart information.  Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES



Knowledge of: the ecology and systematics of Florida's marine animals; personal computers and programs for word processing, data storage and retrieval, data analysis, and creation of graphs, graphics and reports; standard curatorial procedures for the accessioning, cataloging and maintenance of biological specimens; the design of educational materials and exhibits. Ability to: write technical reports and grant applications, and communicate effectively; establish and maintain amicable, professional relationships; formulate policies and procedures relating to the Collections; learn and apply procedures relating to safety, hazardous waste material, and collection and collection facilities maintenance; collect data and utilize problem solving techniques; lift 50 pounds on a consistent basis. Skill in: using equipment customary for field and laboratory collections work, and curation of marine specimens.
