At the Australian Museum we have a project with the Atlas of Living Australia to trial exactly that. We are in test phase right now so have a go and let us know what you think.

The ALA Online Volunteer Portal is now ready for use and testing.

The VP is here http://volunteer.ala.org.au
You will need to create a login, which is easy and instant.

Please try transcribing some cicada labels and let us know whether the website works well for you or if there are some things that we could do better.
This is an important testing phase for the site. Your feedback will give us an opportunity to change functionality and fix bugs in preparation for a full launch to the world.

To help and guide you with how to transcribe the labels we have provided some videos accessible on the transcription page. There are also help icons in the page which you can click on for help.

To provide Feedback please use the orange "Feedback and Support" button on the right hand bottom of the webpage.
Any contribution you can make is greatly appreciated and will assist us to deliver a more effective and enjoyable website for volunteers to contribute to biodiversity science.

The project is being conducted by:
Paul Flemons and the VP team from the Australian Museum (AM) and Atlas of Living Australia (ALA)
Michael Ellliott - AM database and imaging specialist
Dave Martin - ALA Lead Developer
Nick Dosremedios - ALA Developer
Mark Woolston - ALA Graphic Designer

This testing phase will last approximately 3 weeks at which time we will assess all your comments and make changes/fixes accordingly.

Subject: [NHCOLL-L:5542] Crowdsourcing labels

Would you consider using crowdsourcing methods to transcribe handwritten specimen labels? Are you horrified by the idea? Do you have any idea what crowdsourcing is?

Rob Guralnick from the University of Colorado is looking for feedback on this issue from the collections community. You can read more about it, and comment, by following this link:
