Rescue Public Murals  Receives NEA Access to Artistic Excellence Grant 
In addition to assessing and  restoring extant outdoor murals, Rescue 
Public Murals is  working with artists, conservators, researchers, public art  
programs, and paint manufacturers to identify techniques and  materials that 
will ensure the longest life for new outdoor  murals. The National Endowment 
for the Arts recently  announced it has awarded Heritage Preservation a 
_2011 Access to Artistic Excellence grant_

c)   for Rescue Public Murals to identify best practices for  selecting 
surfaces, choosing and applying paints and  coatings, and maintaining outdoor

will  help Heritage Preservation coordinate advice from the field  and 
findings from research underway at the _Getty  Conservation Institute_

Heritage Preservation Announces 2011  Conservation Assessment Program

The Conservation Assessment Program  (CAP) staff is pleased to announce 
that 101 museums in 36  states and Puerto Rico will participate in the 2011 CAP 
 program. The participants include history museums, art  museums, botanic 
gardens, and an aquarium. Each museum will  undergo a general assessment by 
trained conservation  professionals, which will result in a report with  
prioritized recommendations to improve collections care.  Click _here_

Heritage Preservation  Monitors Major Disasters   
The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season  begins on June 1, and with flooding and 
tornadoes affecting  much of the Southeast and Midwest, it is important to  
remember that a disaster can happen at any time. On behalf  of the Heritage 
Emergency National Task Force, Heritage  Preservation hosted an information 
gathering conference call  in April with cultural and emergency contacts in 
the states  affected by the recent rash of tornadoes and the Mississippi  
River crest. Heritage Preservation has also distributed a  press release to 
local media outlets in the affected areas  with simple object salvage tips 
for the  public.

MayDay 2011 Celebrates Institutional  Preparedness 
Another MayDay has come and gone,  and Heritage Preservation would like to 
thank all  participants in the 2011 prize drawing for taking time to do  one 
simple thing for emergency preparedness. Winners of the  prize drawing will 
be announced on June 1, the start of the  Atlantic hurricane season. To

Nominations Solicited  for the CAA-Heritage Preservation Joint Award for  
Distinction in Scholarship and Conservation
Heritage Preservation and the  College Art Association (CAA) invite 
nominations for the  2012 Award for Distinction in Scholarship and Conservation.  
This award was initiated in 1990 for an outstanding  contribution by one or 
more persons who have enhanced  understanding of art through the application 
of knowledge  and experience in conservation, art history, and art.   The 
2011 recipient was Joyce Hill Stoner of the University  of Delaware.  
Nominations for the 2012 Awards must be  received by August 31, 2011, at the CAA,

Alliance for Response  Spring Activity  
Alliance for Response networks  around the country were busy this spring 
hosting meetings,  tours, and workshops for their members. The goal of the  
Alliance for Response initiative is to build bridges between  the cultural

Alliance for Response  Summer Programs
The  second and final Alliance for Response Leadership Institute  will be 
held on July 20, 2011, at the Denver Public Library  in Denver, CO. The 
Alliance for Response National Leadership  Institutes provide an opportunity for 
Alliance for Response  Steering Committee members to strengthen local 
networks and  learn how to build more strategic partnerships with  emergency 
managers.

Heritage Preservation is  also pleased to announce the Galveston-Houston 
Alliance for  Response Kick-Off Forum, currently planned for late summer

The Friends of 'Iolani  Palace Celebrate 2010 Award 
Honolulu’s _Friends  of 'Iolani Palace_

17c) , recipient of the 2010 Award for  Outstanding Commitment to the 
Preservation and Care of  Collections, celebrated the award in February at their

board of directors,  and staff.
