By the way, for entomology there is Collectiones Entomologicae (Horn, Kahle, et al) first published in parts in the 1920s in Germany – Entom. Mitt., then reprinted in 1990. In this reference you can find where older collections were deposited, photos of many of the principal collectors, handwriting samples, etc. E. R. Wagner is also included. There are other such references as well for entomology.

Years ago, Ross Arnett published a directory of insect collectors. I think it last came out in the early 1980s. I'll bet some enterprising person could find a copy and turn it into a digital resource. But even then, it did not include deceased collectors. In an ideal world, it would be great to have such things at our fingertips, but it will eventually come along once most of the collections have their data online.

For botanists, there is the Harvard Index of Botanists, covering
botanical Authors and botanical collectors:

http://kiki.huh.harvard.edu/databases/botanist_search.php?mode=details&id=176

Symbiota has support for the compilation of agent data pertinent to a
given Symbiota instance, though the presentation isn't very pretty yet,
and most Symbiota portals haven't populated these tables yet. For an
example see:

VIAF, as you mention, is a very good source for information on
scientists who are also authors.
