You may also be interested in reading through an article by Amy Davidson,
Samantha Alderson, and Marilyn Fox. You will find some good pointers on
labeling technique and excellent illustrations.  It's a great go to
reference when training  students or volunteers to label specimens.  The
article has a paleontological focus, but the principles would transfer to
other disciplines.  We've had good results using the white acrylic paint as
a base with Pigma pens for writing on plastic vial caps and corks.
