One thing you need to make sure of is that the ribbon core is aligned correctly with the guides to make sure that it is not wrinkling due to mismatches there. We found that by cutting it off the return core it reduced our wrinkling down to almost zero.

Here at the ROM we have a Datamax W6308 and it also has irregularities in the print. Only one discipline (ichthyology) uses it, and therefore it has had comparatively light use. I tried cutting the ribbon from the uptake, but this did not improve the print. Actually, it made it worse. It appeared to me that the irregularities may result from wrinkling of the ribbon, but I have not figured out how to correct this.

Thank you. We'll try the ribbon trick (not rolled on uptake) and if that does not work, the printer head replacement. Good to hear that also works! Lex

You could always replace the print head, You should be able to find Datamax print heads online and replace it yourself, or contact the authorized service dealer for your area. We have the I-4308, purchased in 2002, and our print head is still available from $200-$350. We replaced ours in 2006 by ourselves and the replacement is still going strong.

Our museum currently uses a DataMax I-Class thermal transfer printer. We purchased this printer sometime around 2005 and has been shared by 6 of our divisions. The print quality is no longer good, with letters and lines of print wiped out by wrinkled print film that is not transferring lettering. This is especially critical when printing the small labels (arthropods and parasites) with bar code and 2pt lettering. Over the past 11 years or so, we have been able to correct these problems and have continuous good print quality. However, in that past two months, despite our tweaking and adjustments, we can no longer remedy the problems.

We have cleaned the printer head but beyond that (adjusting heat setting, etc.) nothing has worked.

I am seeking some advice. Since many of us have been using the DataMax printer for over 10 years, I wonder if any of you have experienced this problem...i.e., have we maxed out the DataMax? I would consider our use moderate to heavy so should we be looking for a printer head replacement or should we consider buying a new printer? A lot of work is now on hold and we need to resolve this soon.

Thank you in advance for any information/opinion.

Lex
