Hi William and thanks for the response.

The building is still being built so we don't know yet how many problems we're going to have with pests.

The public exhibits will be indoors but not in a climate controlled room - In general food and drink won't be allowed but I'm sure people will carry some in in their backpacks. At least one exhibit will be outside a case (flying birds) and there are doors near by.

As for the skins being treated: I don't think they are prepared any differently than any other museum skin but will have to ask our preparator.

There are plans to fumigate the entire building on a yearly basis.

I will look into the book link you sent.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Amos

Hi all,

We are about to christen a new building that will house our collections plus some exhibits to the public. While the collections themselves will be in a climate-controlled closed room the exhibits will be out in the open. Does anyone have any experience with pest control in such a system?

Thanks,

Amos Belmaker

Hello Amos,

There are many factors that will determine your pest control measures, but some basic common elements of an integrated pest management plan include sticky/blunder traps, flying insect sticky traps, pheromone traps if you're worried about specific pests, potentially ultrasonic rodent repellents, policies around food/drink, inspection schedules for pests as well as damp, incorrect temperature/humidity, and I'm sure I'm missing a few other general measures that others will mention. There are a good resources out there. I'm more familiar with North American information so they may vary for Israel but the general guidelines should be the same. One I have on my shelf is: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.carrmclean.ca_CategoryGroupBrowser.aspx-3FGroupNo-3D17372&d=DwIFAg&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=VHrCSyCEdAvwNZJvcG94HONt96LUZV6cOXtw26NlYww&s=1s-S6UfNSOJ7cN1cGe5w577SURxzpOek-k1ccC7VfhA&e= .

When you say 'open', do you mean the exhibits will literally be in the open as in outside or is it more of an environmentally uncontrolled/minimally controlled space? Will the exhibits be in cases? Are these study skins or the like, treated in some way? Does the space have a known history of pest issues? Is there food/drink in the area? Do entrances/exits open directly into the space? What treatment options do you have should an infestation be discovered?
