Splitting the ladies

The 2 Ladies have about the same flight period. There is never a time that
Painted Lady is more common based on seasonality. However, every few years
or so (7? 10?) there may be a period in which Painted has an outbreak and
becomes more numerous than American. This seems more likely from about mid
May into the 4th of July count period. Don't think I've ever seen them more
numerous in late summer or fall.
Painted is a bit more rosy in coloration and has more prominent white wing
spots than American. Is this discernible in flight? I'm not sure I would
claim it.
