The moth sounds like the day-flying arctiidae - Virginia Ctenucha (Ctenucha virginica). Those in their subfamily are commonly referred to as wasp moths.

In case everyone was wondering where all the red admirals went, they are all hanging out on Killington Mountain in Vermont (or so It seems).
During my 2.5 hour hike down the mountain this weekend, I lost track after 35 (too many other cool things to see).

    Also noted:

    Atlantis Fritillary (4)
    Orange Sulphur (1)
    Common Ringlet (1)
    White Admiral (2)
    American Lady (1)

That is the best I could do without a net. There was much more along the ski trail meadows which were ablaze with vetch, trefoil, hawkweeds, and cinquefoil but I was reluctant to leave the trail because I was not sure about the rules for hiking up there (i.e. would leaving the trail destroy fragile alpine vegetation and/or initiate erosion on the steep slopes?).

Also noted a moth that had an orange face, blue thorax, and dusky brown wings held backward to form a triangle. Anyone have any idea what it could be?
