On Friday, 4/30, Rich Chyinski, Hank Golet and I visited a site in East Lyme
where we found the following butterflies:
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (1)
Cabbage White (3)
Clouded Sulphur (1)
Henry's Elfin (2) (The first ones I've ever seen in CT)
Spring Azure (15)
American Lady (2)
Red Admiral (1)
We also visited a site in Lyme where we added two species to our day list:
Eastern Tailed Blue (5)
Mourning Cloak (1)
On the way home, I stopped off at Bluff Point, North Guilford where I found
the following species:
West Virginia White (1)
Cabbage White (12)
Falcate Orangetip (2) 1 male, 1 female
Eastern Pine Elfin (1)
Spring Azure (2)
Anglewing species (1)
American Lady (2)
The Eastern Pine Elfin was in the grass in the cemetery. The West Virginia
White was patrolling the woods between the parking lot and the cemetery.
A tip for people looking for the Falcate Orangetip and West Virginia White.
Both species are noticeably smaller than the far more numerous Cabbage Whites.
In addition, both Falcate Orangetip and West Virginia White fly within about
one foot of the forest floor whereas Cabbage Whites fly higher, sometime as
much as 8 to 10 feet in the air. Therefore, the relatively large white
butterflies as well as the white butterflies flying more than a foot above the ground
can be easily dismissed as Cabbage Whites. It's the small whites, the ones
staying close to the ground, that are the ones you want to look at closely.
