Baltimores!

Hi all -

I bopped into Echo Farm SP late this afternoon, hoping to find a few Baltimore Checkerspot caterpillars that I could relocate into the English Plantain in my yard. As I approached the Upper Pond, the first thing I saw was an adult Balto that was perched on the ground - it was totally missing its right forewing! I have to assume that a bird got the wing, as the other wings looked absolutely normal.

A minute later, I found a Balto chrysalis hanging on a grass stem, and then a few feet away were a few caterpillars. To see, in one place and time, three different life stages of a single-brooded butterfly HAS to be a little weird, eh? Down the grassy slope to the Lower Pond there were at least four Baltos flying, all in immaculate shape.

I was there only for about 20 minutes, so the only other bflys I saw were a few hundred European Skippers, some Common Ringlets, and Orange Sulphurs. The flowers at Echo are in great shape, so this weekend would be an excellent time to come visit. I have to travel on Sunday, so I plan on spending some time there on Saturday. The Baltimores should be thick there in the next week.
