We visited the Macricostas Preserve, in Washington township, Litchfield
Co. ( part of Steep Rock lands, see this webpage:
http://www.steeprockassoc.org/MS.html ) today, finding a female Bronze
Copper still out at stream-side, not far from the parking area, along
with a fresh-looking Viceroy, & a Common Checkered-Skipper in very good
shape. A very worn Great Spangled Fritillary was on the purple Verbena
bonariensis blooms at the small butterfly garden, and a near-ghost of a
female E. Tailed-Blue in the meadows. There were plenty of both Orange
& Clouded Sulphurs, & Cabbage Whites. A nice variety of small diurnal
moths were also seen, as well as a good number of Aeshna (mosaic
darner) dragonflies along the wet areas. The preserve is off Rte. 202
about opposite Rte. 45 & has an extensive walking trail. Thanks to
Peary Stafford for all his & others good works & season-long butterfly
observations there.
