On Saturday, 9/1- I visited Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven where I found
a total of 18 species of butterflies, including 16 species in the butterfly
garden itself. The list for the day is as follows:
Black Swallowtail (2) (both males)
Spicebush Swallowtail (1)
Cabbage White (20)
Clouded Sulphur (5)
Orange Sulphur (6)
Cloudless Sulphur (1+) (One female & a possible second individual that flew
by very quickly)
Eastern Tailed Blue (1)
American Lady (3)
Painted Lady (3)
Red Admiral (3)
Common Buckeye (1)
Monarch (66)
Silver-spotted Skipper (1)
Fiery Skipper (2) (A very fresh female and a very fresh male)
Peck's Skipper (1)
Tawny-edged Skipper (1)
Zabulon Skipper (7) (3 males and 4 females)
Broad-winged Skipper (3)
The fact that there were 16 species of butterflies in the butterfly garden
bodes well for the field trip scheduled for this site next Saturday (9/8).
On the way home, I stopped at Vinny's Nursery in Wallingford where I found a
very fresh Leonard's Skipper nectaring on the butterfly bushes.
Vinny's Nursery is on S. Colony Rd. in Wallingford, just north of I-91 Exit
13.
This is the third year I have found Leonard's Skipper at Vinny's Nursery.
That suggests that the species is breeding somewhere nearby, and visiting the
nursery to nectar.
