Pipevine Swallowtail

The fact that the specimen never stopped flapping its wings is evidence that it was a Pipevine...although Black Swallowtail males do flap theirs also while nectaring...but this is more prevalent in Pipevines...

Quite possible. They are overwintering successfully now (in Salem). An image would have been helpful.

I ordered some Pachysphinx eggs for you. They should be in lab. Only 6 eggs....

We are on Long Island beating for Catocala caterpillars--picked up all three target species: badia, herodias, and jair. Good ones.

I can use any Catocala that you can find on Carya, now through middle of month, cheers

Saw a butterfly that I was almost sure was a Pipevine Swallowtail, nectaring on Beautybush (Kolkwitzia amabilis) for 10+ minutes this afternoon. It never stopped flapping its wings so I couldn't be sure of the identification (is this typical for Pipevine Swallowtails...?), and I had no butterfly net to catch it with. Seemed to have no interest in Dutchman's Pipe vine (Aristolochia macrophylla)....maybe was a male.
