On Saturday, 6/30, I visited West Rock Ridge St. Park and found a total of
21 species of butterflies.
In the Lake Wintergreen section of the park in Hamden, I found the
following:
Cabbage White (9)
Orange Sulphur (1)
Eastern Tailed Blue (1)
Variegated Fritillary (1) (My first of the year; historically, a rarely
encountered species in this park)
Great Spangled Fritillary (10)
Question Mark (1)
Common Buckeye (1) (My first of the year; historically, another rarely
encountered species in this park)
Appalachian Brown (1)
Little Wood Satyr (1) (second brood)
Common Wood Nymph (10)
Monarch (9)
Silver-spotted Skipper (2)
Hoary Edge (1)
Southern Cloudywing (3)
Northern Broken Dash (3)
Little Glassywing (20)
Delaware Skipper (10)
Dun Skipper (2)
I also walked the top of the ridge from the parkway south to the southern
overlook and found very, very few butterflies. However, the fact that I
was out in the hottest part of the day may account for my lack of success.
My anemic list for this section of the park is as follows:
Spicebush Swallowtail (1)
Cabbage White (7)
Banded Hairstreak (6) (A record low number)
Northern Pearly Eye (1) (My first of the year and the first example of this
species I found at West Rock Ridge)
Little Wood Satyr (2) (second brood)
Little Glassywing (4)
