On Sunday, July 6th, I visited two sections of West Rock Ridge St. Park
where I found a total of 20 species of butterflies. The list is as follows
(Unless otherwise noted, sightings are from the Lake Wintergreen section of
the park):
Spicebush Swallowtail (1)
Cabbage White (8)
Coral Hairstreak (2)
Edwards' Hairstreak (2) (On top of the ridge between Judges' Cave and the
tunnel)
Banded Hairstreak (10)
Hickory Hairstreak (1) (Judge's Cave) (I noticed that the blue area on the
hindwing was not only significantly larger than the orange spot; the blue
patch extended through the black line beneath the little cap just like the
specimen in Glassberg's 1993 edition of Butterflies through Binoculars, Pl.
9 fig. 5; I don't recall ever seeing a Banded Hairstreak where the blue
patch extended through the black line.)
Eastern Tailed-Blue (1)
Summer Azure (1) (overlook)
Great Spangled Fritillary (22)
American Lady (1)
Little Wood-Satyr (4)
Common Wood Nymph (36)
Silver-spotted Skipper (4)
Hoary Edge (3) (top of ridge)
Southern Cloudywing (2)
European Skipper (3)
Northern Broken Dash (3)
Little Glassywing (21)
Delaware Skipper (1)
Dun Skipper (2)
Far and away, the most productive section of the park for butterflies n
areas immediately north of the Lake Wintergreen parking lot.
