Peter,

This is a very good report. And that is a very nice Aphrodite specimen.

That “Summer Crescent” really DOES look like Diminutor – if I understand just what diminutor is. Scott’s papers were obviously very good and very detailed – and also quite difficult to follow; and NOBODY has, I think, followed up on them in terms of Field Guides.

Also, Northern Crescent (selenis/cocyta etc.) is NOT diminutor; diminutor is either a distinct species OR something related to cocyta/selenis. I don’t think (Harry?) it is related to tharos.

Crescents are always a MESS….

Alex

Some various sightings from June that I never got around to report:

6/4 - Lenny Brown reported that we found an Aphrodite Fritillary at the Mad River Dam in Winchester, which is a new early record by six days. Here's a photo of the frit: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__flic.kr_p_JAfCay&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=wPbNkt6T_H4X7m_PlvSFCGU2a9-csNvfRK2IVMi-mp0&m=fTBheGMDtMDw_f_c3wS3R_iJjFtSLqZQTB_RYhc3oHY&s=nRiSQyJjhOHJ1ORFZJKjQz0OFz3_4hG26YNH6Px2yuc&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com_-3Furl-3Dhttps-253a-252f-252furldefense.proofpoint.com-252fv2-252furl-253fu-253dhttps-2D3A-5F-5Fflic.kr-5Fp-5FJAfCay-2526d-253dCwMFaQ-2526c-253d-2Ddg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw-2526r-253dwPbNkt6T-5FH4X7m-5FPlvSFCGU2a9-2DcsNvfRK2IVMi-2Dmp0-2526m-253dMBCXqJHuNWhwmoe7015Ib-2DuLiLZ-5FVXflfWCGYRRE7xo-2526s-253d7Me6h6qYQuHdcD4atOPeb645yKLBGkOfUmT5XDk57mQ-2526e-253d-26data-3D01-257c01-257cAG-2540balatmp.com-257ceaffda6ab11c471be46c08d3bff68a28-257c2e6e62c5ddae422ea7e6902b42c67999-257c0-26sdata-3Dvbf89p0H-252bwSYk6dlf0FP-252ffHOVfmQSUzLjXvOA84eig4-253d&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=wPbNkt6T_H4X7m_PlvSFCGU2a9-csNvfRK2IVMi-mp0&m=fTBheGMDtMDw_f_c3wS3R_iJjFtSLqZQTB_RYhc3oHY&s=R3YCjUxm_fnPhUsb0mPr16Lu6Ro_1rRUQysoFvac_nI&e= >

I also had a flyby White Admiral at McLean Game Refuge in Granby earlier on 6/4.

6/12 - Goshen WMA, Goshen - I photographed an apparent Summer Crescent: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__flic.kr_p_JDx1UR&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=wPbNkt6T_H4X7m_PlvSFCGU2a9-csNvfRK2IVMi-mp0&m=fTBheGMDtMDw_f_c3wS3R_iJjFtSLqZQTB_RYhc3oHY&s=LngMUBAchUugaEisQBUnj-spzQwj5kU5LE4GVO4h6z4&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com_-3Furl-3Dhttps-253a-252f-252furldefense.proofpoint.com-252fv2-252furl-253fu-253dhttps-2D3A-5F-5Fflic.kr-5Fp-5FJDx1UR-2526d-253dCwMFaQ-2526c-253d-2Ddg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw-2526r-253dwPbNkt6T-5FH4X7m-5FPlvSFCGU2a9-2DcsNvfRK2IVMi-2Dmp0-2526m-253dMBCXqJHuNWhwmoe7015Ib-2DuLiLZ-5FVXflfWCGYRRE7xo-2526s-253d3Y-5FYhTBooykjRBR0H6jocS9yhbAZPMPpXXPFW1yK5zs-2526e-253d-26data-3D01-257c01-257cAG-2540balatmp.com-257ceaffda6ab11c471be46c08d3bff68a28-257c2e6e62c5ddae422ea7e6902b42c67999-257c0-26sdata-3DdzFyTVSaYaPxnfAwHlVtwqGxNM5lXLxOPYiQqNxhqec-253d&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=wPbNkt6T_H4X7m_PlvSFCGU2a9-csNvfRK2IVMi-mp0&m=fTBheGMDtMDw_f_c3wS3R_iJjFtSLqZQTB_RYhc3oHY&s=8qTzWXNoS-e5ZT2wUrzjRF9FwjsEZXSdrRFkMwTunpA&e= >

As I understand it, they look a lot like Northern Crescents (Phyciodes diminutor), but may be more closely related to Pearl Crescent. Otherwise, two Silver-bordered Fritillaries were noteworthy.

6/27 - Goshen WMA, Goshen - worn Dreamy Duskywing, which is a new late date

I also had a White Admiral on the dirt road before the entrance.

6/23 - Northwest Park, Windsor - large skippers were flying in good numbers. I counted 15 Hoary Edges, including six in in the small area behind the second tobacco shed: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__flic.kr_p_HLCcPw&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=wPbNkt6T_H4X7m_PlvSFCGU2a9-csNvfRK2IVMi-mp0&m=fTBheGMDtMDw_f_c3wS3R_iJjFtSLqZQTB_RYhc3oHY&s=C5S1MRjtI91wpZwOhOHNCvVPRax7nVWzw-uyM-hIUkg&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com_-3Furl-3Dhttps-253a-252f-252furldefense.proofpoint.com-252fv2-252furl-253fu-253dhttps-2D3A-5F-5Fflic.kr-5Fp-5FHLCcPw-2526d-253dCwMFaQ-2526c-253d-2Ddg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw-2526r-253dwPbNkt6T-5FH4X7m-5FPlvSFCGU2a9-2DcsNvfRK2IVMi-2Dmp0-2526m-253dMBCXqJHuNWhwmoe7015Ib-2DuLiLZ-5FVXflfWCGYRRE7xo-2526s-253dQqXxXXA-5FCujQg1v-5Frt3b2K5Z1FBumliPGFzWEjWtsEg-2526e-253d-26data-3D01-257c01-257cAG-2540balatmp.com-257ceaffda6ab11c471be46c08d3bff68a28-257c2e6e62c5ddae422ea7e6902b42c67999-257c0-26sdata-3DL1tNQnZjsOzR6Ac0sy7gy6bql4f7Uyjm8P9gkhhNJ30-253d&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=wPbNkt6T_H4X7m_PlvSFCGU2a9-csNvfRK2IVMi-mp0&m=fTBheGMDtMDw_f_c3wS3R_iJjFtSLqZQTB_RYhc3oHY&s=-sDJUZjzGiS5Tku5V_2xINrUKHajFhYOajsJK0p5zQs&e= >

Also around were 4 Southern Cloudywings, 7 Northern Cloudywings, a few Silver-spotted Skippers, and 2 Gray Hairstreaks among other species. One of the Southern Cloudywings oviposited, and I managed to find the egg: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__flic.kr_p_JgTnYS&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=wPbNkt6T_H4X7m_PlvSFCGU2a9-csNvfRK2IVMi-mp0&m=fTBheGMDtMDw_f_c3wS3R_iJjFtSLqZQTB_RYhc3oHY&s=98fA5_nicB46wROO9vLONJlTnJV19Q_Hx7C2Y3YEXQY&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com_-3Furl-3Dhttps-253a-252f-252furldefense.proofpoint.com-252fv2-252furl-253fu-253dhttps-2D3A-5F-5Fflic.kr-5Fp-5FJgTnYS-2526d-253dCwMFaQ-2526c-253d-2Ddg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw-2526r-253dwPbNkt6T-5FH4X7m-5FPlvSFCGU2a9-2DcsNvfRK2IVMi-2Dmp0-2526m-253dMBCXqJHuNWhwmoe7015Ib-2DuLiLZ-5FVXflfWCGYRRE7xo-2526s-253dvJZUUAYKsVPmb3CKnDCXeqkwU7srwF-2Dbzby5IeA-5F68s-2526e-253d-26data-3D01-257c01-257cAG-2540balatmp.com-257ceaffda6ab11c471be46c08d3bff68a28-257c2e6e62c5ddae422ea7e6902b42c67999-257c0-26sdata-3DNtGZ1Yfl8j1PspZH0YxR4mfq4Ava0FnvzJgb56R2-252fK8-253d&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=wPbNkt6T_H4X7m_PlvSFCGU2a9-csNvfRK2IVMi-mp0&m=fTBheGMDtMDw_f_c3wS3R_iJjFtSLqZQTB_RYhc3oHY&s=qho1tOHhxY__Xo0b9yqO7CV0Cdd6lWNeM4iFO7IT62E&e= >
