[Histling-l] Specialized course offerings in historical linguistics

Hi,

Our English section offers courses in English historical linguistics as part of the regular curriculum for students in the 2nd year and the 4th year of our 5-year master's programme. It is mandatory for our students to complete a certain number of courses. They choose freely from among those we offer, and we have a rota as far as what courses are on the menu in any one semester. We feel it is important to offer these courses, although it does happen that no one signs on for a particular course, in which case it does not run that semester. We currently offer Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and the History of the English Language as four different courses. The Old English course includes a bit of history, whereas none of the other ones focuses on anything other than language, e.g. the Middle English course is not a course in Middle English language and literature. There are more courses still, which get activated on demand, e.g. one in Historical English Syntax.

Best wishes,

Jacob

Folks,
I wonder how many departments or programs regularly offer specialized courses in historical linguistics, especially listed as such in course catalogs ... historical syntax, historical phonology/sound change, historical sociolinguistics, etc. Is it more common to do these as 'topics' courses? It's in part a question about the visibility and profile of historical linguistics in departments and programs.

Thanks,
Joe
