Question of the Week ...
I heard that it is difficult to get credit for study abroad on
non-Yale programs. Is that true?
No! We've been trying to dispel this myth for quite some time now,
yet it still persists. Don't believe what others tell you -- here is
the real scoop on the credit issue ...
Getting Yale credit for the Year or Term Abroad Program is an easy,
painless process. Students who have been approved for study abroad by
the Committee are guaranteed credit as along as they take a full
course load of approved courses, and receive grades of C or better in
all your classes abroad. That's it. As noted in the Blue Book:
"Usually, if the student has consulted with the director of
undergraduate studies and an adviser in the Office of International
Education and Fellowship Programs before going abroad, the award of
credit upon return from the Junior Year or Term Abroad Program is routine."
In most cases, using courses taken abroad for credit in the major, or
toward distribution requirements, is also not difficult -- as long as
students talk to their DUS and dean before going abroad, and keep
them informed about any courses changes made during the program's
"shopping period." Some departments may also want to see course
syllabi, papers and/or exams, though sometimes just a transcript will
do. Check with the relevant DUS for more details.
