nonetheless:

an interesting place to follow the "l" question would be in 70s and 80s
music.  Southern All Stars as well as early Matsuda Seiko made lyrical
points in pronouncing the "r/d/l--a" sound precisely as if it were an
English "L".  Especially in the case of SOS's innovative understanding of
lyrics, these vocal media would provide an interesting way to make the
problem less one of deviance from standard romaji and more one of actual
articulation.
