Dear Chris,
I'm forwarding your letter to the KineJapan list, which you might want to
join. The directors you mention (an excellent list, I might add) often come
up in our discussions. Information for joining can be found on the Kinema
Club site.
Just off the top of my head, here are a couple suggestions. 'm assuming you
know the standard English language works by Desser and Burch. There is a
wealth of info in Japanese, of course. For a number of these people,
including Kumashiro and Sone and many others, you should definitely get
your hands on _Roman poruno, 1971-1982 zen eiga: Kanno no puroguramu
pikucha-_, edited by Yamane Sadao (Tokyo: Film Art, 1983). There has been a
Terayama boom in the last 5 years, so there is truckloads of material on
him (including Image Forum tapes of his main experimental films). Yamagata
Film Festival publications have some info on Kanai, Wakamatsu, Oshima and
others, but it's slim. Obayashi has a website (see Kinema Club). Finally,
try the Kinema Club Database, which is under construction but will turn up
some unusual entries.
KineClubbers may have other suggestions.
