That's an extremely interesting statistic, and I wonder if some list
members have some insight into specific differences in production practices
in the UK and Japan that might account for it?
Still, I don't know that quantity and quality need to be seen as mutually
exclusive. For example, at the 1996 PIA Film Festival retrospective Sento
Takenori, a producer whose name I think has come up a couple of times
recently on the list, gave a "Front Line Producer's Talk" called,
?u? ???????????v
"Ryoo wa shitsu wo umu" ("Out of Quantity comes Quality," if I read this
correctly). That's a venue where there would likely be a lot of aspiring
filmmakers, so its an opinion that probably has some weight and direct
influence. He had produced 27 films in the previous 5 years at that point,
including Furumaya Tomoyuki's "Kono mado wa kimi no mono" (This Window is
Yours), a very nice film that made the rounds of the art houses in the US.
That probably calls into question the second opposition (internal vs.
international).
