I am posting this reply to A. Kilian's query on Kobayashi
a second time as my earlier post may have been lost.

There is a 44-page program note on Kobayashi with the cover
and spine title <Kotetsu (steel) no Nihon eiga: Kobayashi
Masaki no sekai> published on the occasion of the 1st
"Nihon eiga no hakken", an annual event in Shinjuku first
introduced in 1988 by Imamura Shohei and his film college.
This booklet has a preface by Imamura, a short piece by
Kobayashi on his mentor and art teacher who influenced
him, a chronicle of his life, and his complete filmography.
Each of his 22 films gets a coverage of one to two pages.
It is well illustrated and includes a number of short essays
by the actor Nakadai Tatsuya, the Canadian Japanese film
specialist Claude Blouin, the writer Inoue Yasushi, and the
composer Takemitsu Toru, etc. It was published on 25 Nov.
1988 at 500 yen and must be available in some Japanese
libraries in Kyoto or Tokyo.

I presume there should be some Japanese M.A. theses on
Kobayashi as well.
