I think you'll have to look into anime, considering it's definitely had a
huge effect on American cartoons. Disney- technique, plot, and Disney has
bought a few and distributed them directly: Kiki's Delivery Service and
Monoke Hime (Disney subsidiary got this one.)  A number of the Fox animated
series, like Batman and Superman, show some similarities to late 80's anime.
Not to mention Japanese manga's influence.

But more directly to your question, I'd look at these books:

The Worlds of Japanese Popular Culture, ed. Martinez

Japanese Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, Galbraith
   (you'll have to dig a bit for useful info in this one.)

Samurai from Outer Space, Levi

Eros and Massacre,   hmmm... can't remember off the top of my head....
sorry...
    (useful, but you'll have to draw your own parallels)
