Charlie Chaplin came on the same ship as Jean Cocteau,
(a famous french poet/writer/filmmaker/artist...) and they spent a night discussing on the ship before they landed in japan ; cocteau relates it in his book "Le tour du monde en 80 jours" which is the collection of papers he sent periodically to the french newspaper who sponsored the trip, as an homage to Victor Hugo's centenary...
Feel free to ask more details if necessary, I don't have the book with me but can find out more about it.
