He is offering the money up front, is honest about what it is and sounds
like he did budget accordingly. It's just that budgets for this sort of
book--actually for books in general--are generally quite small and a large
part of it is probably coming out of the author's own pocket. Many
publishers won't even pay for the index. Now if it was likely that a
Kurosawa biography would hit the best-seller list and be optioned for a
major motion picture release then it may be different but in all liklihood
the book will probably struggle to stay in print (which is where
KineJapan-ers come in), though Faber has an admirable dedication to film
books.
