how to locate early Japanese films

The Film Center has a website: http://www.momat.go.jp/fc.html
The also have a catalogue of their holdings; mine is from the 1980s, so I don't
know what they've found since. Most of their prewar collection is originally
from the US, so check Library of Congress, etc. for holdings.
Also try Matsuda (private and for profit, mind you) at their website:

There are private collections in Japan, especially in the hands of benshi or
their families. I don't know whether anyone has published even privately a
list of all available films.
