The Kurosawa Akira Bunka Shinko Zaidan announced its plans for building a
Kurosawa Akira Kinenkan in Imari City in Saga Prefecture. Kurosawa had
liked the sunsets and the old atmosphere of the town and had declared
before his death that he wanted to have his museum built there.
The two-story museum will be part of the Imari Family Park currently
under construction, and will look from the outside like a mountain
castle. The first floor will consist of a theater and a special
exhibitions area while the second floor will feature the permanent
exhibition spaces. The roof will have an observation deck.
The city will lend the land for free and the Foundation will build the
museum for 1.5 billion yen. Construction will start in the summer of
2001 with a planned opening in winter of 2002.
