I've heard that this practice was not unusual in theaters running pink or
roman-porno films. Anyone know more?

I've also heard from quite a number of women that movie mashers are a
problem no matter the genre. This would suggest that it's not an effects
studies-style reading of screen sex inspiring real sex; it's a shrewd
business decision to create a space where one segment of the market simply
doesn't have to worry about the bother (it's easier than making a fuss
about it).
