Actually, the English version has the film notes and has been substantially
retranslated (the original one was done under duress, let me tell you). The
catalog also has a nice essay on Yamagata's connections to the war, which
didn't make it into the English version.

The best book on the war film is probably by Doherty, the title is beyond me
at the moment.

There's also a very nice reprint of internal documents from the US forces. I
don't recall the title, but my library has it so a search will probably turn
it up. (It's about 5 or 6 volumes stretching into the postwar period).
