DVD play

You can find anything you need for PC-DVD or standalone DVD at this site:
http://www.dvdutils.com/
Some standalone players can be altered without soldering, by entering
"secret" codes with the remote. The site has a list. PC region changing is
much easier: just run a piece of software. There are other advantages too:
frame grabs for illustrations and a better image (on a computer monitor or
through a data projector).
Also, you can add subtitles to unsubtitled DVDs using software such as
SubMagic. I've been experimenting with this recently. It's not perfect --
the synchronization tends to drift and you need a computer monitor or data
projector -- but at least I can show something other than the classics to my
classes! I've subtitled _Kurutta kajitsu_ and _Arashi o yobu otoko_ so far
and I'll be doing Buta to gunkan next (the 16mm print is no longer available
for non-theatrical screenings). Anyone else feel like doing some subtitling?
The program also doesn't mess with the DVD itself so it's probably safer
from a copyright perspective than fan subbing. The major problem is that so
few Japanese films have been released on DVD...
