It used to be that only the DVD hardware accelerator or software player
would be "region locked". This could be changed relatively easily by
software that modified the registry entries for the device. Now, new drives
are also supposed to be region locked. But many ship with this lock
"unlocked" and others can be unlocked by changing the "firmware". Not as
easy as before but not too complex and afterwards invisible.
