A former student of Yomota Inuhiko, Hirasawa Go, is organizing a
retrospective of the films of Adachi Masao in Tokyo (the information is
below). There will be a special issue of Eiga Geijutsu to accompany the
retrospective. This is a precious chance to see some interesting films by
one of the most controversial figures in Japanese film. Adachi came out out
of student experimental filmmaking to make films with Oshima and Wakamatsu.
He was one of the leaders of the Suzuki Seijun Incident, after which he took
increasingly radical positions. While working with the second Eiga Hihyo he
made connections with the Red Army, which had an office in the same
building as the editorial office. Then in the mid-1970s, he surprised
everyone by leaving Japan and joining the Red Army. Last year he was
arrested in Lebanon with other Red Army members and is sitting in jail in
Beirut right now. There is a chance he'll be extridited to Japan this year,
and since his crime is minor (using a fake passport) he would be out of
prison fairly quickly. It will be very interesting if he returns to the
Japanese film world. But apparently there are demonstrations in the streets
of Beirut to prevent the extradition....
