Mark posted the announcement I sent him of New Cinema from Japan at the
Berlinale.
I should add that New Cinema from Japan is only a loose coalition of
individuals working to promote Japanese cinema overseas. We've printed
English pamphlets and rented a booth in the Berlin European Film Market
for the past four years with some sponsorship from the Japan Foundation
and recently, the Tokyo International Film Festival (or actually, its
mother organization). But since we rely mainly on the participation fees
of each film we represent, to make the market booth happen, we pass on
the huge task of covering the entirety of Japanese cinema to competent
(and official) organizations like UniJapan.
The announcement of our lineup is not the full official selection of the
Film Festival itself. Seven other films have actually been selected for
the programs of Competition, Panorama, Children's Fest, and Forum, but
are not represented in our lineup.
Other films in official selection:
In Panorama
JUBAKU (Spellbound) directed by Harada Masato
In Children's Filmfest
Adventures of the Hilarious Trio directed by Kashima Tsutomu
In Forum
Across a Gold Prairie directed by Inudo Isshin
Homesick directed by Mito Hineki
One Piece! by Yaguchi Shinobu and Suzuki Takuji
Rendez-vous directed by Yamamoto Kosuke
Anyway, those of you who were planning to skip Berlin this year and
devote your time and money in Rotterdam, here's why you should change
your flight booking now! Incidentally, though market screenings and the
video booths (both in the market compound) are open only to accredited
film professionals, the official selection film screenings are obviously
available to the public.
