Having tracked down a new outlet for THE JAPAN TIMES, I'm looking forward to
Mark Schilling's top ten of the year which will presumably be published on
Tuesday. And Aaron's reponse to it. I hope other people based in Japan on
the list can also give their own personal lists. (And perhaps I should put
my money where my mouth is this year too.) Shame that Kinema Junpo's poll
of critics doesn't include any bloody foreigners, as its always interesting
to compare male and female critics on that list.
A Korean internet site has just conducted a poll which puts Iwai's LOVE
LETTER as the second best foreign film of the year, after LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL
and before THE MATRIX. Make of that what you will. Honours for best Korean
film went to SHIRI, opening in Japan soon, with ATTACK THE GAS STATION! and
HARMONIUM IN MY MEMORY both making the top five. Latter won several awards
at the recent Blue Dragon awards in Seoul.
