I thought this notice on the Next Frame International Film Festival might
be of interest to list members. A bit of self-PR -- I'll take part in a
panel discussion on independent cinema to be held on Friday March 17 from 6
to 8 pm at the American Center in Shiba. Hope to see a few of you there!

Temple University Japan presents the Nextframe International Film
Festival March 18 and 19 at the Tokyo International Forum.  This annual
festival is produced through the U.S. based University Film and Video
Association, in association with Temple University, which selects the
best student films and videos from an annual competition of student
films and videos from around the world.  With 419 films submitted from
23 countries, Nextframe is the largest student film festival in the
world -- Nextframe films have screened in 9 countries and at the
emerging filmmakers section of the Cannes film festival.

In addition to the Nextframe films, each program will include selected
films from Eyesaw visual artists, the Interdependent Film Forum Tokyo,
the Finnish Institute and animation from young U.K. filmmakers.

Films will be shown at the Tokyo International Forum Audio-Visual Hall,
D block, 1st floor, March 18 and 19 from 1-5pm and 6-10 pm (doors open
at 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm).  The films are shown in two programs, and are
subtitled in English and Japanese (Japanese subtitling by Bluemoon,
Ltd.)  Tickets are 1,500 yen per program or 1,000 yen for students, and
are available through the PIA ticket outlets (ph. 03-3265-5592; fax: 03
3265-5698) and at the box office of the International Forum theater on

The festival premiere will be held March 17, from 6 - 8 pm at  The Tokyo
American Center, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in
Japan.  This event will feature a panel discussion of international
filmmakers and critics discussing the future of independent film, with
filmmakers Harada Masato ("Jubaku," and "Bounce: Ko Girls"), shin-ya b.
(Watanabe Shinya), Japan Times film critic and author Mark Schilling and

Following the panel discussion there will be an opening party from 8 pm
at DELUXE in Azabu Juban, featuring the performance artist Ishihara
Midori and her installation "Kumo no Ue Ofuro."  Both the panel
discussion and party at Deluxe are free and open to the general
public.   Deluxe, 1-3-3 Azabu Juban, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0045.  Take
the #6 bus from Shibuya to the Ichinohashi bus stop or the Hibiya line
to Roppongi station.
