Not quite an inter-racial romance, but Niki Caro's "Memory And Desire" (NZ - 
1998?) is the story of a honeymooning Japanese couple in New Zealand, and 
the woman's descent from grief into madness once her partner drowns 
mysteriously.  The film does feature a white male NZ character who helps her 
and is eventually taken in (temporarily) as a surrogate for her dead 
husband.  I'm not aware if this has been released internationally, apart 
from the odd festival of course.  Visually it's a fantastic piece of work, 
with a real stunner of a performance by the female Japanese lead (name 
escapes me, although I believe it was her first foray into cinema).  Anyone 
seen it?
