Not quite an inter-racial romance, but Niki Caro's "Memory And Desire" (NZ -
1998?) is the story of a honeymooning Japanese couple in New Zealand, and
the woman's descent from grief into madness once her partner drowns
mysteriously. The film does feature a white male NZ character who helps her
and is eventually taken in (temporarily) as a surrogate for her dead
husband. I'm not aware if this has been released internationally, apart
from the odd festival of course. Visually it's a fantastic piece of work,
with a real stunner of a performance by the female Japanese lead (name
escapes me, although I believe it was her first foray into cinema). Anyone
seen it?
