Buruma's book on Japan

Behind the Mask was also issued as Beyond the Mirror--different titles for
the US and UK markets. Most major US public libraries carry a copy, as
well as university libraries. The book was important in its semi-academic
approach to Japanese popular culture. In retrospect, though, Buruma's
arguments run rough. Too frequently, he assumes some kind of one-to-one
correspondence between the texts he analyzes and the subjects who consume
them. In this regard especially, his analysis of sexuality and gender are
far from adequate.
