	hi Janet.

I seem to recall a rather lively thread from a few months ago which took up
the issue of Zen in Ozu and Japanese film quite extensively, although I'm at
a loss to find any of it in my own files - perhaps someone else can post the
name again. You'll presumably be able to find it in the list archive anyway.
Also, have you seen any films by the great Taiwanese director Hsiou Hsiao
Hsien? His style is sometimes compared to that of Ozu, although I know that
is quite a controversial assessment and to me is a somewhat superficial
reading of Hou's work, (while I have seen quotes attributed to Hou which
both support and reject the argument). There's a superb site devoted to
Hou's film 'City of Sadness' which discusses the issue at:

As for looking for Japanese films, you might want to look into some of the
Hong Kong based dvd and vcd retailers - you can pick up a lot of stuff
fairly cheaply e.g. I recently bought Gonin, Tokyo Eyes and Ping Pong Bath
Station each for about the same price as a cinema ticket. (Again this is
something that has been discussed extensively in here fairly recently).

Best of luck with the Masters - I'm hoping to get back to college to do
something similar myself in the near future (if I can sort the finances out
that is!)

regards

graham
