Aaron's right that most prints from and to Japan are done with laser or 
chemical "burning," but that actually makes for the clearest prints. 

Only when you subtitle by using a separate subtitle band (sandwiching the 
negative with another negative just of subtitles) does the laboratory have to 
make the choice of either a softening of the subtitles or of the image, 
depending on which layer is on top when you make your print.

Frankly, the odds on favorite almost always, sad to say, is that the theater 
is lying. It's the state in the US as well and theatre managers are always 
shocked when the patron -- I love it when my wife has to explain optics and 
subtitles to a surprised theatre owner -- actually corrects their lie or 
stupidity.
