A few years ago professor Peter B. High of Nagoya University published an
important book focusing on Japanese cinema during and between the two world
wars. The book was published in Japanese under the name "Teikoku no
Ginmaku", but it was translated recently and will be published in English
soon by the University of Wisconsin at Madison under the name "Imperial
Screen" (or something close to that).
It is a very well-researched book (was short-listed for the prestigious
Mainichi Cultural Award.

Cheers,
