Two recent examples which show an interesting image of the fusion of
non-japanese cultures in Japan (albeit in a somewhat fictional setting in
both cases) are Takashi Miike's Hazard City (Hyoryugai, 2000) and Shunji
Iwai's Swallowtail Butterfly (Swallowtail, 1998 I believe).
Unmissable in the light of your subject is of course Tora Tora Tora (1970),
a US/Japan co-production which showed the attack on Pearl Harbour from both
countries' sides. Even though the American sequences were helmed by an
American director, there is a remarkably consistent tone of criticism
running throughout the film.
Also try out Kinji Fukasaku's Battles Without Honour and Humanity (Jingi
Naki Tatakai, 1973) for an example of the role the American occupational
forces played in the formation of the contemporary yakuza.
