To start off, but also to be a bit confusing, here are some choices in
rough chronological order:

1. Kokushi muso (Itami)
2. Mito Komon (Arai Ryohei version)
3. Tange Sazen Hyakuman-ryo no tsubo (Yamanaka)
4. Chikemuri Takadanobaba (Makino/Inagaki)
5. Oshidori utagassen (Makino)
6. Shichinin no samurai/Seven Samurai (Kurosawa)
7. Chiyari Fuji (Uchida)
8. Yojinbo (Kurosawa)
9. Ansatsu/Assassination (Shinoda)
10. Joi uchi/Samurai Rebellion (Kobayashi)

Odd list, if only because half are comedies. So I am not being strict in
my definition of the genre, using, for instance, David's notion of the
Sword Film. I included anything with a lot of samurai. This is just
from memory and today's mood. Try me again later sometime.
