Shindo Kaneto

There was a recent retrospective to his work in Tokyo and the Montreal World
Film Festival did a light homage to him last year, screening his most recent
film BY PLAYER, a biopic of Tonoyama Taiji. That also played in Fukuoka
Focus on Asia film festival. Before that he made WILL TO LIVE in 1999,
alongside IKEHATA Shunsaku's AUTUMN BLOSSOMS, the best of the recent wave of
films about the elderly but that only seems to have played Locarno. In
fact, his granddaughter, Shindo Kaze, seems much more popular on the
festival circuit with LOVE/JUICE than Kaneto has been in many a year.

You can find a bio in Western film encyclopaediae. Just from his
scriptwriting alone, he's one of the most important figures in post-war
Japanese cinema. Recent screenwriting work include A PERFECT EDUCATION (d.
Wada Ben), SOLITUDE POINT (d. Matsui Hisako) and THE GEISHA HOUSE (d.
Fukasaku Kinji). In September, Koyama Seijiro's A SINGLE DROP IN A MIGHTY
RIVER will be released by Toho, from a Shindo script. Not bad for an
89-year-old.
